Well July continued where June left off, providing some of the most taxing weather conditions to photograph a wedding in. However, Rachael and Alex's wedding proved the exception. The rain started early in the morning and looked to continue throughout the day but just as Rachael and Alex came out of the abbey the sun broke through and shone down on them all afternoon. Someone was definitely looking down on the happy couple. Rachael and Alex were married at Worth Abbey in West Sussex which provided a stunningly modern backdrop to the ceremony. Their reception continued at Slaugham Place, which I had not been to before but will certainly be one of the venues I recommend to prospective clients, with flowers and the cake being provided by friends. The evening continued with dancing and bacon sandwiches.

Wai and Richard got married on another perfect April day, in Trowbridge, with friends and family coming from near and far including Malaysia. After the ceremony we all drove to Bath for the reception at the Bailbrook House Hotel. Bath is always a popular venue for me as the city itself provides a fantastic backdrop with its honey coloured stone and sweeping vistas. It didn't fail to deliver. The evening reception was a huge favourite with the guests with the DJ James Carpenter residing over a pub quiz. Arabella and Charlie

Arabella and Charlie had the most perfect wedding day, on the most perfect day in April. The weather was perfect, the setting was perfect; actually, everything was perfect and, being in the Weald of Kent and remembering the 'Darling Buds of May', albeit a month early, I couldn't help myself from saying 'perfic'! Everything had been planned to perfection with not a detail missed, from Arabella's dress to the flowers and the family home providing a beautiful backdrop to the day. It makes my job a pure pleasure and so easy however, with over two hundred guests I had to keep on my toes to make sure I got a photo of everyone. Gemma and Gareth

Gemma and Gareth got married, on a perfect spring day, in Cheam, Surrey. It was lovely to see everyone enjoying the warmth at last and not hiding underneath big, heavy winter coats. The ceremony was an intimate affair with some lovely readings from friends and family. The one thing I love about early season weddings is the low sunlight which always seems to find its way into my lens, producing some fantastic 'flair' effects which, in the old days of film, would have spelt disaster. After the ceremony, we decamped to the Old Rectory in Cheam for the reception. The Old Rectory is a hidden gem in South London and would be perfect for anyone looking for a smaller scale reception venue. All the staff were so friendly and provided a super service with wine flowing freely and huge log fires in the evening. A huge congratulations to Gemma and Gareth.

I have always wanted to photograph a winter wedding in deep snow as it's just so romantic. Well, this year my dream has come true and then some. Charlotte and Ben got married a week ago in the midst of the coldest, whitest winter I have ever seen. Their venue was Sheldon Manor which provided a stunning and most romantic backdrop to the day, with roaring log fires in every room and mulled wine for everyone. With guests flying in from around the world the only concern was whether everyone would be able to get there. Hats off and an extra mince pie goes to Dan though who ended up walking several miles through the bleak mid winter to arrive just in time for the first dance. Now that's friendship. A huge congratulations to Charlotte and Ben!

Joanna and William got married in the beautiful town of Beaconsfield. Joanna had grown up there so there was a lot of memories and emotions flying about. The reception was held just down the road at West Wycombe Park which has been used many times as a film location to the point that I was half expecting Mr. Darcy to come riding across the lawn. The house does provide the most beatiful backdrop however, with sweeping lawns and lakes with temples. As a photographer I couldn't really ask for more. Congratulations to Joanna and William.

Kate and Matthew got married at a beautiful chapel in Llangattock, Brecon. I've never been to this part of Wales before and I have to say that I would love to go back and spend a bit more time there. It's stunning countryside! After the ceremony, we all decamped to the Peterstone Court Hotel for the reception. The hotel overlooks the Usk Valley with fantastic views across to the Brecon Beacons so, if you're thinking about a quiet weekend away, I would definitely recommend it. The evening was started off with a band I haven't heard before but they certainly deserve a closer look and when they started their rendition of Mustang Sally, the Grooms father stole the mike and the Brides Maids took on the backing vocals. Absolutely brilliant!

Beanie and Toby got married on a typical English summer day, enough said, from Beanie's family home in deepest rural Hertfordshire. They couldn't have asked for a more perfect setting with everyone pulling out all the stops to create the most magical setting for the wedding. I love photographing home weddings with marquee's in the garden and family pets pinching all the food. They offer a more personal backdrop and can make for some really interesting and intimate pictures. The evening reception kicked off brilliantly with everyone getting into the swing and finishing off with fine demonstration of limbo dancing. Congratulations to Beanie and Toby!

I've been to Witley Court once before and always wanted to go back as it is one of the most romantic venues in the country. Located in the middle of the worcestershire countryside, Witley Court is a ruined palladium country house with beautiful gardens and the most exquisite church. Sarah and Luke got married at the church and then moved on to the Elms Hotel in a horse drawn carriage for the reception. Sarah is passionate about horses and so Luke gave her an extra special wedding present which absolutely amazed everyone. The evening was finished off by a display of very energetic dancing by the guests followed by a chocolate fountain and a fire dancer. Last week I returned to Great Fosters to photograph Helen and Simon's wedding. Great Fosters is always a treat for me as it presents so many opportunities for really great images I'm like a child in a sweet shop. It was actually quite a windy day so Helen's veil was doing it's own thing which I love as it can create some quit unusual images. The gardens at Great Fosters are amazing with formal layouts and water features with bridges; you just can't go wrong. After more than ten years years photographing weddings I have now found the perfect reception venue. It's called Aynhoe Park and it's quite literally stunning. I photographed Suzannah and Duncan's wedding there last Saturday, on what so far has been the hottest day of the year. Guests travelled from America, Australia and the Middle East to be there and to celebrate the day which was organised by Sophie at Aynhoe Park and catered for by Indulgence at Aynhoe. Suzannah and Duncan couldn't have chosen a more beautiful venue which was festooned with the most incredible collection of stuffed animals and sculpture. The perfect wedding photographer

There are so many wedding photographers out there these days, some good, some bad and some just plain awful. However, one thing they all seem to have in common is that they all seem to be offering something different. My feeling is that, once you've taken away personal preference regarding style etc., the service that wedding photographers provide should all be pretty much the same. So the question is 'What is the perfect wedding photography package?'. With that question in mind I am setting of on a quest to find the illusive 'Perfect wedding photography package'. It will be a long hard struggle but I feel that the rewards will far outweigh the costs... So where to start? There's no point in asking other photographers as they will just say that their packages are the best blah, blah, blah! So I reckon the people to ask are the brides themselves; past, present and future. Maybe you read this blog or you'll find it by accident. Hopefully, it will grow organically and reach many, many people. I certainly hope so!

I guess you get what you pay for

It just goes to show you that the buyer should beware. I've been saying this for so long now and this gives me another opportunity to rant a bit more. Clients occasionally ask me why I charge quite high prices for my wedding photography services to which I reply 'to separate myself from the cowboys who, if you choose to buy their services, will ruin your day'. With the advent of digital cameras and cheap to build web sites anyone with the inclination can set themselves up as a wedding photographer which ultimately could provide them with a useful secondary income. I say second income because a lot of the people who have done this have a full time job as well.

What can couples do to protect themselves against this form of misrepresentation. Firstly, you can ask them what they do during the week as this will get rid of half of them. Secondly, you can ask to be put in touch with a previous client or two for a reference. Thirdly, ask to see their last wedding in its entirety. Any photographer is only as good as his last job. Finally, make sure your photographer has professional indemnity insurance.

So just in case you need a little more persuading you might like to watch this.

Ho-Yan and Trevor got married on a perfect Autumn day at Weybridge Registry Office which is probably one of the nicest registry offices I've been to as it has a lovely garden, which isn't overlooked by offices etc., and it has lot's of parking spaces. And I can't tell you how important that is for a photographer. After the ceremony we all decamped to Foxhills Golf Club which again is very impressive with amazing views, from the garden, over the golf courses. Great fun was had applauding the golfers from the terrace. After the breakfast we witnessed a traditional tea ceremony which added a little culture to the evening and onto dancing and a casino!

Victoria and Paul got married on the hottest day this year and being September I guess we're looking at a 'Barbecue Autumn"... Victoria and Paul got married at Witley Court near Worcester and, although I've said this many times before, this has to be one of the most romantic locations I've been to. The church is set in the grounds of a ruined stately home with beautiful gardens and a fountain the size of my house. Both the Bride and Groom are in the RAF so no shortage of uniforms to help the photos along. What is it with people in the armed forces, they just know how to party. After the champagne reception at Witley Court we all moved on to the Curradine Barns for the Breakfast and dancing, the music being supplied by a really good band who did a fab cover of 'Baker Street' which is my favourite song. Now I'm showing my age...

Hanna and Nick

Well this was certainly one of the more unusual weddings I've photographed but a fantastic day none the less. Hanna and Nick are living in Australia so all the planning was done via e-mail so I only met them a few days before the big day. The wedding was at Larmer Tree Gardens in Wiltshire, a venue I've photographed wedding's at many times, and always provides the most wonderful backdrop. The order of the day was for no formal portraits and no group shots so I was free to do what I'm good at which is lot's of informal and candid reportage photography. This was made even easier for me since there were lots of children and games for everyone. In the evening the reception took a bit of a twist with Rollapaluza. Both Hanna and Nick are very keen cyclists, as were most of their guests, so static cycle racing was the order of the day. I was exhausted just watching and no, I didn't have a go....

Tim and Lucy got married at Penn in Buckinghamshire with their reception near Rickmansworth. Friends and family had flown in from all the globe to share in their fantastic day and they were not disappointed. Tim's family are from Scotland and so there was a lot of tartan on display with family friends piping Lucy into the church. Afterwards, everyone went on to Micklefield Hall for the reception. I have to say, that of all the weddings I have photographed in Buckinghamshire, Micklefield Hall has probably got to be one of my favourite reception venues. Anna and Jamie, who's house it is, offer a wonderfully intimate and friendly service which Jamie say's 'should be like a home from home'. Well, it's certainly that and more with the house itself offering a perfect backdrop and the expansive grounds providing a fantastic playground for adults and children alike. Thankfully, the weather held off until the breakfast when the heavens opened but I don't think anyone really noticed by that time....

Indira and Trevor got married in Calne on the hottest day of the year so far. Indira wore her mothers wedding dress and the most amazing pair of shoes I think I've ever seen. The Dean who officiated the ceremony was a member of the family and had also officiated Indira's mothers wedding. All the guests were then taken off in a double decker bus to the Assembly Rooms in Bath for the reception where everyone was entertained by a cartoonist and magician. The Assembly Rooms are probably one of the most romantic settings for a reception in that part of world and well worth a look if you're considering getting married in or around Bath as it's just round the corner from the Royal Crescent which is great for photos.

Alanda and Tim got married at Oulton Hall just outside of Leeds in Yorkshire. If you live near Leeds and you're getting married, this is the place to head for. Over three hundred rooms and a fantastic golf course should keep your guests happy for a while. As always, I had a good look at the other suppliers and reckoned that the band was well worth a listen to. They're called Hipster and travel all over the country. A fantastic day and a big thank you to Alanda and Tim for looking after me so well...

Jo and Bruce got married on a perfect day at Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire. If ever you wanted the perfect venue for a wedding this must surely be it. The extensive grounds and gardens, including the amazing ruined abbey, were made exclusively available to Jo and Bruce and their guests so everyone could wonder around uninterrupted by members of the public. The staff at Sudeley Castle were fantastic and made sure that everyone had everything they wanted. As I said, a perfect day at a perfect location.

Katherine and Jonathan got married at the New London Synagogue on a perfect Sunday afternoon, with the sun shining down on everyone. It was a beautiful service in a beautiful Synagogue. Then it was off to 1, Lombard Street for the reception. Again, this was a fantastic reception venue, the restaurant having a Michelin Star to it's credit, and the food was totally amazing. I'm always keeping an eye open for new ideas and suppliers and on this occasion I found one in the shape of Party Poppers. A new band with so much energy I was exhausted just watching them. They don't have a web site yet but keep a look out for them.

Niran and Candida got married in January and since Candida's father is a Major General they were allowed to get married at Westminster Abbey. Another bitterly cold day and no one wanted to hang around for too long. Sarah and Nicholas got Married in October at the Rectory Hotel near Malmesbury; one of Wiltshire's better kept secrets. This is one of my favourite wedding venues as it is very small and low key and the food is superb. Couples normally book the whole hotel for the weekend so family and guests can relax and really let their hair down. I photograph a number of weddings here each year which means I know that the couple are going to have a really wonderful day.

Pierre and Jasmine got married in September at Magdalen College, Oxford. The setting for their wedding was absolutely perfect and the weather held up for them thankfully. Pierre and Jasmine were the perfect on the day, allowing me to do what I do best, which is to dissolve into the background and take great pictures. Their reception was held at the home of a family friend and everyone danced the night away as well as indulging the Swedish custom of everyone kissing the bride and groom when one or the other left the room.

Back in August Rob and Tiffany got married at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond, London. This is a fantastic venue for a London wedding when you want a bit more of an outside occasion. The views from the terrace are some of the best in London and overlook the river Thames. Rob and Tiffany run their own wedding planning business which specialises in antique and period weddings. They put so much energy into there own wedding with attention focused on the smallest of details the effect was beautiful.

Hi, I have been photographing weddings for over ten years and I still can't think of anything I would rather be doing. Over the years my clients have often asked me to recommend supplies or venues, as well as wanting to see images from other weddings to get some inspiration for their own.
